Skin Rejuvenation with Equine Collagen Type I by Andrea Corbo
Heterologous Collagen Type I has been used over the years for wound healing and skin regeneration. In recent years, it has become available in medical devices in which Heterologous Collagen Type I was micronized and put into sterile vials for injective use. Heterologous collagen has documented effects on tissue regeneration, fibroblast activation and mitosis, and collagen biosynthesis induction.
Materials and methods
At the time of treatment, collagen powder is put in suspension with 5 ml of saline solution and injected intradermally using the meso technique every 2 cm along the face, neck and decolletage. Three different volumes of equine collagen (50, 100 and 220 mg) were tested on 120 subjects, with the 100 mg demonstrating superior results. A second group of 321 patients were treated with 100 mg of collagen for skin rejuvenation. A split face test was performed to assess product stability and its effectiveness. Photographic documentation was collected before and after treatment, and a self-administered questionnaire was recorded by patients.
Results
Treatment was effective in skin rejuvenation goals. Visual and self-evaluation outcomes show better features in skin hydration, brightness and texture. Side effects were similar to other injective treatments as transient bruising, redness and heating. No allergic reaction was reported.
Conclusion
This novel product has interesting effects on skin regeneration, consisting mainly in stimulating an increase in the number and activity of fibroblasts, as we know from previous studies.
